2.07 Free Blog
For this assignment I chose to read the first chapter from Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mockingbird. In this chapter we see a young girl introduce her family and begins to tell her story. She introduces her brother Jem and her father Atticus. She explains the origin of how her family got to Maytown county and then carries on with her story. She introduces Dill, who I assume is going to be significant to the story based on what I have read. Besides talking about who Dill is and how they met she explains what seems to be the beginning of the actual plot of the book. It begins when Dill dares Jem to go up to and touch the Radley house, the house belonging to the Radley's who are the odd family in the community that are very antisocial and keep themselves to themselves. They don't participate in any of the common neighborhood activities and have many rumors circulating about what they do during the day and at night. Jem goes and touches the door and they see a shutter flick for a second, this appears to be the beginning of the main story. The beginning of the chapter is slow paced as it is the exposition and the introduction of all the characters which tends to be a bit boring. However, once the characters were introduced and the scenario was set I found the passage to actually be interesting and made me wonder where the story would go after that. If I were to create notes on the chapter to remember the important points I would probably use an outline. Outlines are very organized and easy to create and read so I feel they would be the most beneficial to me in this case.

Assignment 1.03
The quiz I took for Assignment 1.03 gave me a result that said my favorite genre was nonfiction and my second favorite was drama. I disagree with this result. While I believe nonfiction can be interesting I do not think it would be my favorite genre as I would much rather read a story that was imagined and is not subject to limitations often placed when a story is based on a real event. If anything I think nonfiction would be my second favorite and drama should be the first.
What is the last thing you read and enjoyed and why?
The last thing I read and enjoyed was an article on the economic and political changes that took place in the 17th and 18th century in the Ottoman Empire. It was very interesting to read about how Sultan Abdul Mejid had to become more open to other cultures and make various revisions to laws and economic policies to help out the empire during its crisis. It was also very interesting to see how, despit the fact that these reforms were needed, many people actually opposed the changes and felt he had betrayed them. It was informative and entertaining at the same time.
